3 Female Led Films to Watch While Self-Isolating

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

By Roxan Alfonso

With the entire world in unprecedented times and hopefully everyone paying close attention to what they’re being told. Practicing social distancing as well as keeping themselves safe and healthy, we have a lot on our minds right now. Keeping ourselves and others fed, clean, and financially sound is at the top of the list when it comes to it. But, the rest is, well, keeping entertained, scrolling through Netflix to see the latest new movie or TV show.

It’s no secret that many movie theaters and cinemas have shut down in the midst of these trying times. And that, because of that, some films that have only just dropped in theaters are now yours to enjoy from home. A few female-driven and let’s not forget that collection of feminist cinema you’ve, no doubt got stacked on your shelf.

Let’s grab that hammer and swing it because here are

Birds of Prey (and The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) (2020)

Released theatrically on February 7, 2020, under the direction of Cathy Yan and starring Margot Robbie (who also served as producer and a major creative force), this colorful follow-up to Suicide Squad could do no wrong. The film tells the tale of Harley Quinn’s life after her breakup with The Joker as well as her attempts to rescue a young girl from the claws of a crime lord with the aid of Renee Montoya, Dinah Lance, and Helena Bertinelli. Anything more would certainly spoil it. Have a little faith and watch it. Find it on iTunes and other digital formats.

Little Women (2019)

This recent adaptation of the beloved classic novel, directed by Greta Gerwig, and starring talents such as Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, and Eliza Scanlen, to name a few, was released this past Christmas and is here for you if you need a softer, comforting watch. The tale as old as time about the four March Sisters and their adventures with childhood friend Laurie (played beautifully by Timothee Chalamet) is one for the ages and is ideal if you’re in want of something more, well, idyllic. You’ll have a cry in the midst of laughter and sopping up the drama and that’s a promise. Enjoy it on formats like Google Play and YouTube.

Booksmart (2019)

This entry stretches a little further back as it was released theatrically last year on May 24, 2019. Directed by Olivia Wilde in her directorial debut and starring relative newcomers Kaitlyn Dever and Beanie Feldstein, this coming-of-age comedy is about two high school seniors on the verge of graduating who decide to party the night before to make up for lost time due to their studious natures. Sounds simple enough but, this film ends up being more than it set itself up to be and you will enjoy the results. Watch on Hulu and other digital platforms.
